Biography: Masaaki Yoshimura

President-Elect

Masaaki Yoshimura began his tenure as President-elect of the International Actuarial Association on January 1, 2017.

As President-elect he is a leader and Officer of the Association, a member of the Executive and Nominations Committees, and Chair of the Strategic Planning Subcommittee, having previously served as a member of the Executive Committee from 2012-2015 and as Vice-Chairperson of the Professionalism Committee from 2005-2008.

Masaaki was born in Osaka, Japan in 1956. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Mathematics, from Kyoto University, then went on to obtain a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Graduate School of Management of Boston University.

Mr. Yoshimura began his career at Sumitomo Life, a Japanese mutual life insurance company, where he worked for about 30 years. During that period, he accumulated a wide variety of experience in the areas of Corporate Actuarial, International Investment, and Planning and Research. In addition, he assumed the role of General Manager of Corporate Risk Management, served as an Appointed Actuary, and spent three years in the United States as Chief Representative of Sumitomo’s New York office.

Masaaki joined Milliman’s Tokyo office in April, 2012 and assumed the role of "Representative in Japan in January", 2013. He is co-managing the Tokyo office and consulting on issues related to Enterprise Risk Management (ERM).

He has served as General Secretary of the Institute of Actuaries of Japan (IAJ) and is currently a board member, Chairman of the ERM Qualification (CERA) committee and Chairman of the ERM committee. He also contributed to draft a report on demutualization and to the IAJ’s Standard of Practice regarding the allocation of policyholder contribution in demutualization. He also has experience working as a member of the Insurance Working Group of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB).

Masaaki used to play soccer when he was a student and enjoys reading books and listening to music these days. He and his wife, Chizu, reside in the vicinity of Tokyo. They have an adult son and daughter.
