The IAA and Actuarial Society of Turkey Host Regional Seminar in Istanbul

Following the admission of the Actuarial Society of Turkey (AST) as a Full Member association of the International Actuarial Association (IAA) in November 2016, the AST undertook to host a regional seminar in Istanbul with the support of the IAA’s Eurasia and Middle East Subcommittee (EMESC) of the Advice and Assistance Committee.

The seminar, which took place from 9-10 November 2017, reinforced the AST’s commitment to advancing the actuarial profession in Turkey. The two-day agenda comprised topics on general insurance with a focus on motor third-party liability (MTPL) insurance, life insurance and pensions.

Mr. Arif Hikmet Cesur and A. Gaddar Erbek, from the Turkish Undersecretariat of the Treasury, provided opening remarks to the 180 participants in attendance, who were mostly from Turkey but also from Brazil, Canada, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Spain and the UK.

Vladimir Novikov, EMESC Chairperson, congratulated the AST on its success at attracting interest and participation from local CEOs and the regulator to engage in open discussions and thereby enabling the AST to strengthen its position and relationship with key industry stakeholders.

This activity supports the IAA’s mission to promote professionalism, develop education standards and encourage research while representing and promoting the role, reputation and recognition of the actuarial profession. Further, it contributes towards achieving the IAA’s strategic objective to support the development, organization and promotion of the actuarial profession in areas of the world in which it is not present or is not fully developed.
