IAA Creates Eurasia and the Middle East Subcommittee

The Advice and Assistance Committee of the International Actuarial Association (IAA) has created a new subcommittee to provide assistance in supporting the development, organization and promotion of the actuarial profession and actuarial education specifically in Eurasia and the Middle East. Vladimir Novikov has been appointed as Chairperson, and Ibrahim Muhanna as Vice-chairperson, of the Eurasia and the Middle East Subcommittee (EMESC)*.

The EMESC will provide advice and assistance, when requested, to IAA member associations, to actuarial associations seeking to become members of the IAA, and to countries in the region wishing to establish new actuarial associations or to strengthen existing ones. The EMESC will assist newly established local actuarial associations to promote the role of actuaries and to grow the global brand, and help to increase awareness and recognition of the profession.

Its main roles will include:

  • Providing a forum for interaction between actuaries and others having a particular interest in the development of the profession in the region;
  • Working with IAA member associations and their corresponding committees and task forces to promote the co-ordination and harmonization of the contributions of each entity;
  • Ensuring that the Advice and Assistance (A&A) Committee is kept well informed about the development of the actuarial profession and actuarial education in the region; and
  • Working with the Actuaries Without Borders Section to access volunteer resources to carry out specific projects.

This activity contributes towards achieving the IAA’s strategic objective to support the development, organization and promotion of the actuarial profession in areas of the world in which it is not present or is not fully developed.

Membership of the subcommittee is being considered. If you have an interest in Eurasia and the Middle East, and would like to become a member, or wish to learn more about the work in this area, please contact the Chairperson of the EMESC, care of the Secretariat.

*For the purpose of this subcommittee, the Advice & Assistance Committee has defined Eurasia to encompass the South-East European, Central Asian, and Transcaucasian countries. The Middle East will only include countries not in Africa.
