IAA Holds Council and Committee Meetings in Zagreb

The International Actuarial Association (IAA) held its semi-annual Council and Committee meetings in Zagreb from September 28 to October 2, jointly with the 15th anniversary celebrations of its host, Hravatsko Aktuarsko Drustvo, the IAA Full Member Association in Croatia.

The IAA Council meeting held on October 2 featured a presentation from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) given by Timothy Bishop of the Financial Affairs Division. His presentation “Orientations and Priorities for the OECD and Avenues for Cooperation with the IAA” had a primary focus on insurance and private pensions. He described the work of the OECD’s Insurance and Private Pensions Committee (IPPC) and provided details of the IPPC mandate and its specific policy objectives, including:

  • Improving insurance and private pensions awareness and education
  • Strengthening private pensions systems to address the challenges of ageing
  • Enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of financial regulation
  • Improving the financial management of large-scale risks

Timothy Bishop commented "The OECD work we are doing on insurance and private pensions benefits from the expert advice of the private sector and other stakeholders. The IAA participation in this work is of great importance to us in ensuring our policy guidance is based on sound actuarial principles.”

Among other recent activities also reported to Council in Zagreb are two that expand the scope of topics covered by various IAA Working Groups and Committees with the formation of an Environment Working Group and an Islamic Finance Expert Panel.
