The IAA and the United Nations
Millennium Development Goals

The International Actuarial Association (IAA) is among the many international organizations whose program of research and development is influenced by the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG's). The eight UN MDG's are:

  • Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger
  • Achieve Universal Primary Education
  • Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women
  • Reduce Child Mortality
  • Improve Maternal Health
  • Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases
  • Ensure Environmental Sustainability and
  • Develop a Global Partnership for Development.

Through the ongoing activities and programs of the various IAA committees and working groups, the IAA is pleased to be contributing towards achieving the objectives defined by the UN Millennium Development Goals, often by working in collaboration with other supranational organizations. The actuarial profession has a long-established history of involvement in the traditional areas of mortality, morbidity and health, social security and insurance. The IAA Microinsurance Working Group is committed to expanding actuarial involvement in the development of microinsurance as a means of alleviating poverty. The IAA Mortality Working Group is engaged in monitoring efforts internationally to facilitate continuous improvement in the quality and extent of data collection and to extend the body of knowledge through research.  The IAA Population Issues Working Group is engaged in activities at the international level that make a contribution to the public interest on such topics as ageing, fertility and migration. The IAA has recently established a Working Group on the Environment whose mandate includes climate change, resource depletion, and environmental issues involving risk management and their economic impact. The IAA Social Security Committee is involved in issues that address the global challenges of providing old-age income support and ameliorating poverty through the provision of social security as a basic economic safety net.  Last but not least the work of the IAA Insurance Regulation and Enterprise and Financial Risk Committees on systemic risk and related issues is directed to helping achieve  the global financial stability required to enable the MDG’s to be fulfilled.

The IAA acknowledges the challenges posed by the UN Millennium Development Goals and will continue to dedicate the resources of the global actuarial profession to their accomplishment.
