Advancing the Actuarial Profession in Latin America

The International Actuarial Association (IAA), through its IAA Fund and the Latin America Subcommittee of the Advice and Assistance Committee, sponsored the Third IAA Fund Seminar for Leaders of the Actuarial Profession in Latin America in Bogotá, Colombia on November 21–22, 2011. The seminar was held in conjunction with the Third International Actuarial Symposium in Colombia and was hosted by the Universidad de los Andes, Universidad Naciónal de Colombia, Asociación Profesional de Actuarios, Asociación Colombiana de Actuarios and FASECOLDA, the Association of Colombian Insurance Companies.

Approximately 100 people attended the event, mainly from Colombia, but also from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama and Peru, including speakers from Canada, France, Spain, United States and the United Kingdom. The IAA Fund provided bursaries for 10 participants from Latin America.

The meeting was opened by the Rector of the Universidad de los Andes and the President of FASECOLDA. Speakers included Chris Daykin, Chief Executive of the IAA Fund; José Luis Lobera, Chairperson of the Latin America Subcommittee; Enrique de Alba, Vice-Chairperson of the Education Committee; Eduardo Melinsky and Ignacio del Barco, Members of the Latin America Subcommittee; and Eduardo Lara, Member of the IAA Health Section. Topics included the role of the IAA; the importance of professionalism; the Actuarial Educators’ Network; IAA education; accreditation requirements; the IAA Health Section, and a round table discussion on actuarial education.

A major objective of the meeting was to encourage the Colombian actuaries to advance their association so that it can be admitted as a Full Member association of the IAA. Discussions also took place with several universities about developing actuarial education in Colombia, possibly with a joint project involving universities in Spain, Portugal and France.

This activity meets the objective of the IAA Fund, which is to stimulate and support the development of the actuarial profession and actuarial education in actuarially-developing countries. To learn more about the work of the IAA Fund, contact its Chief Executive, care of the IAA Secretariat.
